Longmen Campsite & Fulong Beach

I was hesitant to stay at such a large campsite but it is spread out enough that if it is not at full capacity it is a very nice campsite with good facilities. Most of the camp sites have some shade, but some more than others. Most have picnic tables. The bathroom and camp sites are reasonably clean. There is a pedestrian and bike only area with wooden tent platforms. There are old Carrefour shopping carts that can be used to push your gear from the car to the camp site. There are also drive in camp sites which were more popular. There are a limited number of cabins with private bath. There is a a bath and toilet house with hot water, a camp store selling very basic supplies (including flashlights, batteries, stoves, stove fuel, bottled water, 2 brands of beer, ice, Coke), a large covered picnic area (which some people also use to camp out of the rain). There is a walking/bike path to the river where you can see the river open to the sea, and there is a boardwalk to Fulong Beach. For entry to Longmen, there is a fee per car or scooter, per person for day use, and an additional camping fee. Scooter is TWD 70 and people are TWD 20 per day. Not sure about the car and camping rates. Charcoal BBQs and camp fires are not allowed. You can order a gas BBQ complete with the food.

Driving from Taipei:
By scooter or car you can take Highways 106 and 2, estimated time 2 hours (from Google maps, I didn't keep track of time).

Muzha Rd is Hwy 106. You can connect to Muzha Rd from Xindian Fuxing Rd, which can be accessed by going South on Roosevelt Rd (turns into Beixing when you cross to Xindian)
or from Zhonghe on Jingping Rd heading east.

On Muzha Rd straight (left fork) onto Xiuming Rd (right fork is Muzha and will loop back but takes longer). At the next intersection with Muzha Rd, turn left back onto Muzha Rd towards Wanfang interchange and Xinyi Expressway.

Follow out of metro area. You will pass under the elevated freeway and some
bus parking, then the final gas station until your destination.

At the fork in the road there is a final 7-11. Turn left toward Pingxi (not right toward Pinglin).
This is the last 7-11 you will see until your destination.

After passing through a small town the road will fork and you will need to turn right onto Hwy 2.

From here at the 11 km marker you will go through a tunnel. Between 17.5 and 18 km is a 2 level coffee shop. This is about the only place to stop along the way. Just past the 19 km marker you will need to turn right.

Follow this to the gas station where you connect with the coastal highway. Turn
right at the gas station. The first almost immediate left is Longmen, continue on to Fulong Beach, the train station, 7-11, and the few restaurants in town.

There is an open air restaurant featuring wood fire whole roasted chicken. Coming from Xindian, there is a bus stop at the 4 km marker, just past this on the left is the restaurant. They have parking in the rear.

Sanxia

Sanxia can be reached by car or scooter on Highway 110. From Taipei County, Zhonghe City, AnPing Rd, go South into Xindian, and this will become Highway 110. Watch for signs toward Sanxia and Yingge. Queens Town campground is a large private riverside park in Sanxia. They have a swimming pool, restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, river access, hiking trail access, a small general store with only bare essentials, picnic areas with shade tents, and campsites, There are a few cabins with more under construction. Every campsite has parking, electricity, water, and large wooden platforms. Most campsites lack picnic tables and privacy. To reach Queens Town, from Taipei on Highway 110 turn left at the 33 km marker. There are other campsites in the area, including at least one which offers paint ball gun games.

Having a baby in Taiwan

Having a baby in Taiwan has left me too busy and tired to write about it. The above is a clinic in Yonghe, just across the river from Taipei City reasonably close to Dingxi MRT station. This was my first time going through the process, so I have nothing to compare it to. I was generally satisfied with the clinic, and will probably go back again if the need arises.

The doctor went to med school in the US, so he can speak English but clearly is more comfortable speaking Chinese. The nursing staff for the most part do not speak English. This was fine for me since my wife speaks Chinese.

Now open in the Xinyi District. They have a nice selection of beers and the pizza is good too. The pizza toppings are very flavorful, only the crust leaves a little more to be desired. The price is a little high, but not outrageous. Beers are $210 per glass, or you can order 6 beers for $999, which makes it significantly cheaper if your party will drink that much.

It is on the second floor and they have outdoor seating on the sky walk. If you are coming by MRT, use the Taipei City Hall Station. Walk South to Songgao Rd. and between the Eslite Bookstore Building and the Shin Kong A4 Building there are stairs to the sky walk. When there is a left hand turn you will see the restaurant straight across this bridge, which is the A11 building.

There are many small pharmacies throughout Taipei. If you know what you need, many medications which may be available by prescription only in your home country may be available over the counter. Of course, there are still some medications that are only available through a doctor or hospital such as opiate based pain killers.

A larger pharmacy which is often suggested if you are looking for something hard to find is the Shanghai Pharmacy.

518 Local Bus

The 518 runs regularly throughout the day. The 518 starts at Taipei Main Station and then stops at Shuanglian MRT Station (2 stations north of main station on the Red-Danshui Line). It then follows Minsheng Rd. to the end before turning south to Songshan Train Station. It then goes to Neihu before turning around and reversing its route.

If you catch the 518 from Shuanglian going east during morning rush hour be prepared for a cramped and painful experience. There are times when the bus is filled beyond capacity, and people need to wait for the next bus. Since there is no orderly line in place, getting on the next bus can be just as bad as trying to get on the first bus.

Shipping your scooter within Taiwan

I never finished researching this topic, but I know it is possible to arrange transport within Taiwan.

If you are leaving Taiwan and want to take a scooter with you, it is best to forget about it. Most countries have import restrictions. If allowed it will not be cost efficient. It's best to plan on selling your scooter and buying a new one at your next destination.

Mapquest: They have a map, but no point-to-point directions. As with most English language map sites, the Romanization is questionable.

Maporama: They offer a decent map. It does include a search function to map from point-to-point. The site is randomly about half English and half French.

MRT Station area maps: they have detailed maps of areas around each station. The maps are not always formatted with North on top, so be sure to check if you orient yourself that way.

Taiwan Map: This site lets you search by landmark or street. I don't care for this site. The map is not detailed and the search function can be frustrating.

Taipei 101 Building Observatory

I haven’t been up yet, but if we get a clear day we should go.

CKS Memorial

This is easy to see and can be done quickly. It is a large plaza surrounded by ornate Chinese buildings. This is where a lot of the political rallies and holiday festivals take place.

Longshan Temple / Snake Alley / Night Market

Longshan is a small but very nice temple. Snake Alley is creepy and as the name implies they have snakes. There is a good night market which is like a flea market. They are all within walking distance of each other.

National Palace Museum

This is a little boring, but a very cultural experience. Lots of Chinese antiques and artifacts.

YangMingShan National Park

A mountain inside just off of the city.

Maokong Teahouse/Zhinan Temple

This is an excellent temple located in the mountains. There are also scores of teahouse offering a mountainside view of Taipei. Good during the day or at night.

Ximending Market / Red House Theater

A more modern night market. Next door is the Red House Theater which is cool looking as it is back lit in red. It has a nice gift shop for souveniers.

Boutanical Gardens near Xiaonanmen MRT station

Never been there, always meant to.

A large park with 2 small museums.

Get back to nature and swim in the river. Nothing particularly cultural about this place, but it’s one of my regular camping spots.

Sulfur hotsprings. We can hit this the day after you arrive to try to cure the jet lag.

Scenic area with free riverside hotsprings.

Danshui Coast and Fisherman’s Wharf

Scenic area, but not terribly special or having any cultural significance.

Overnight Trips

Taroko Gorge National Park / Hualien Ocean Park

Taroko is an amazing site as the cliff goes straight up on one side of the road and straight down to the river on the other side. The nearest town has an ocean park where you can swim with dolphins.

East Coast Hot Springs

More hot springs, Taiwan is famous for them. That’s why the Japanese didn’t want to leave.

The Taoyuan Taiwan International Airport (formerly CKS airport, and still using this as the airport code) is Taiwan's primary international airport and is the only option for international arrivals to Taipei. If you arrive here and are flying to another destination within Taiwan, you will need to transfer to the Songshan Domestic Airport which is located inside Taipei City.

Pet Import to Taiwan

In general, I suggest that you do not import pets to Taiwan, but if you are determined to do so, please research the requirements carefully and budget enough to cover the costs. The official Taiwan government's pet import regulations can be found here. You can download the regulations in English as well as an import permit application.

You can expect that importing a pet can cause difficulties and will involve a considerable expense. You can contract a pet agent to assist in the process. This will make your life a lot easier but will significantly increase your costs.

Here is an overview of what is needed for an import permit:

In order to apply for the import permit, copies are acceptable. Upon arrival in Taiwan, all original documents must be available along with the import permit.

Vaccinated against rabies

Primary vaccination at the age of at least 90 days old, and the period between the day of vaccination and the day of shipment shall be no less than 180 days and no more than one year.

Booster vaccination: vaccinated no more than one year prior to shipment.

Blood samples of dogs or cats to be imported shall be taken and sent to the designated laboratory for neutralization antibody titration test for rabies antibody which shall be at least 0.5IU/ml. Report of neutralization antibody titration test for rabies antibody which shall be at least 0.5IU/ml and tested by rabies reference laboratories of the World Organization for Animal Health or laboratories designated by the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine with the blood sampling date no less than 180 days and no more than 2 years prior to shipment.

Rabies vaccination certificate issued by a veterinarian of exporting country and certifying vaccination by inactivated vaccines. The rabies vaccination certificate shall be in Chinese, English or bilingual and state the breed, sex, age, microchip number, date of rabies vaccination, and whether the vaccination was primary or a booster.

health/vaccination certificates must indicate the rabies vaccination is "killed virus" or "not active virus" and whether it is "primary" or "booster".

A copy of passport or identification card of the importer.

The importer shall apply to the animal quarantine authority of exporting country for a veterinary certificate, the veterinary certificate shall be in Chinese, English or bilingual and include the following information:

(1) Breed, sex, age, and microchip number of the dog or cat.

(2) Date of vaccination against rabies with inactivated vaccine, and whether the vaccination was primary or a booster.

(3) No clinical sign of rabies shown upon inspection of the dog or cat.

(4) At least 0.5 IU/ml rabies antibody in the blood of the dog or cat sampled no less than 180 days and no more than 2 years prior to shipment for a neutralization antibody titration test which shall be carried out by rabies reference laboratories of the World Organization for Animal Health or laboratories designated by the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine.

On arrival of the dog or cat at the port of entry, the importer shall apply to the animal quarantine authority for quarantine inspection and submit the import permit, original veterinary certificate issued by the animal quarantine authority of exporting country, bill of lading or customs declaration form (or B/L). The dog or cat without an original veterinary certificate issued by the animal quarantine authority of exporting country shall be re-exported or destroyed.

A. When conducting quarantine inspection of the dog or cat imported from rabies-infected countries, animal quarantine authority at the port of entry shall check the veterinary certificate and detain the dog or cat at the designated post-entry quarantine premise for 21 days. During quarantine detention, the blood of the dog or cat may be sampled and tested again for rabies antibody. If the rabies antibody is under 0.5 IU/ml, the dog or cat shall be revaccinated with inactivated rabies vaccine.

1. Please be advised that if any incompliance is found in the statement of the certificate, the dogs or cats will be re-exported, destroyed or detained at the designated post-entry quarantine premise for 180 days.

It is strongly advised that pets arrive in Taiwan on a weekday morning. Pet customs is only open during business hours, so if your pet arrives in the evening, then you will have to wait until 9:00 AM the next morning to clear customs. Evening flights may be unavoidable, but do your best to avoid weekends. Time spent at the airport does not count toward time in quarantine. If your pet is held at the airport, only you, the owner, will have access to the pet, and you will be responsible for providing food and water.

Here are some of the costs involved excluding your pet's airfare, and any agent fee which can be hundreds of US Dollars.

A. Airport terminal or airlines handling fee: Approx. USD 50.00 charged at cost.

B. Quarantine station fee: Approx. USD 25.00/per day/per pet or at cost if over / mandatory 21 day quarantine. Estimated rate USD 525.00

C. Tax/Duty as assessed by customs

If you are leaving Taiwan, and want to take your pet along, then be prepared for complications and expenses. It is not to be taken lightly, but it can be done. It is your destination that determines how difficult or expensive it will be. You should carefully research the requirements of your destination, before finalizing your plan to bring your pet.

Most destinations will require that your pet be implanted with a microchip and receive rabies or other vaccinations. A vet in Taipei with a lot of experience handling export vaccinations and documents is Dr. Yang in Tianmu:

To Australia:
You will need to apply in advance for an import permit and pets will be quarantined. Pets from Taiwan will face a minimum 30 day quarantine. The application fees are AUD $280 for the first animal, plus AUD $60.00 for each additional animal.Quarantine charges will be extra. For more information check out the Australian Government Website.

Health Checks at Renai Hospital

Health Certificate Exams for visas or other reasons are done at Renai Branch, of the Taipei City Hospital. It is located on Renai Rd. near the Fuxing intersection. If you are walking south on Fuxing (from the MRT for example) the Howard Hotel will be on the right hand side you want to be on the left hand side. If coming by MRT, the nearest station is Zhongxiao-Fuxing Station on the Blue and Brown Lines.

Hours are 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM and 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM on Monday through Friday. They are open 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday if you are willing to fight the crowd. Closed on Sundays.
BRING YOUR PASSPORT.

Bring your passport, at least 3 photos, and about NTD 1000. It will probably take a couple of hours.
Exams are located on the 2nd floor. Follow the signs for Health Certification. You have to walk by the blood draw area, where you will go later. They will give you the paperwork. Fill out 3 copies and attach 3 photos.
Go the the 1st floor, counter 11. They will stamp your paperwork and give you a number.
Go back to where you just came from on the 2nd floor.
Wait for your number to be called. They will look over your forms, check height, weight, eyes, and blood pressure. They will give you a set of cards to turn in at each exam site.
Take this back to the 1st floor counter 11, where you received the number.
Pay the fee, less than NTD 1000. They will give you a card telling you when to return for the results and will stamp each of your other cards which correspond to each of the tests you need to take.
I had to go to the Dermatology Dept. on the 2nd floor for a skin exam. They give you an area with a curtain to undress then a doctor came in and did a quick visual exam. I didn't have to do this last time. They tried to match female doctors with female examinees.
Now you need to get a blood test on the 2nd floor, and depending on your exam type such as a JFRV, then you may have to give a stool sample. Just make sure that you come ready to provide a sample should this be necessary. Only a small sample is needed for testing.
Now go to the 3rd floor get an Xray.
Now after you have done everything, return your paperwork on the 2nd floor where you had your eye exam.
The office in this area is where you will return to pick up the results. Remember your passport and receipt.

Buses from Taipei to other cities

Near Taipei main station there are a couple of bus stations. The Kuo Kuang (Guó Guāng 國光) East Station has service to the airport and Keelung (Jīlóng 基隆). The Kuo Kuang stations can be reached from the MRT by walking through the underground mall and their are signs pointing you towards the proper exit. Between the Kuo Kuang West Station and the Intercity Bus Station you can reach most major destinations in Taiwan. The intercity terminal has service to Hsinchu (Xīnzhú 新竹). The Intercity Bus Station houses several companies so you may need to go to a different window depending on your destination.

Marriage in Taiwan

In order to be married in Taiwan and added to your spouse's household registry you will need documentation from your home country that you are eligible to marry (not currently married).

This will vary by country. The process is very straight forward for Americans, since the US does not keep a central marriage registry. All that is required is a notarized sworn statement that you are eligible to marry. AIT can notarize this for you. For looking at your passport and stamping a document they charge USD $30, but you get a discount if they notarize a second document at the same time (this includes notarizing a duplicate document, which may or may not be required depending on who you ask). They have a sample Affidavit Regarding Marital Status document on their website. You will need to make an appointment online in order to have the affidavit notarized.

Now take this to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to be authenticated.

Once you have your documents in order, you need to bring them to the Taiwanese courthouse where you will apply to be married, and set a date for the courthouse wedding ceremony. You can get official English language translations of the marriage certificate, which is a good idea, as you never know when you will need it, and it is not expensive.

After the wedding, you will need to go to a different office to register with your spouse on the household registry. If you are applying for a JFRV, make sure to get 2 notarized copies.

Applying for a JFRV (Joining Family Resident Visa):

Why apply for a JFRV: With a valid JFRV ARC you are exempt from work permits under the Employment Services Act, Article 48, Paragraph 1. You can also have up to 3 years before renewal is required. Your ARC will now be tied to marriage, not your job, and for most people that will be a more stable and secure situation.

I was married in Taiwan and already had an ARC through work when I applied. I have heard of some people being required to leave Taiwan for this. I assume that they entered with a visitor's visa. This is what was required of me:

1. Criminal record clearance from home country/state. This was the only document which I needed to have sent from the US. This step will be different for everyone based on their citizenship. Since this document comes from abroad, and documents are only valid for 3 months, you are advised to get this first, before you go for your health check.

If you are a US citizen, it is probably easiest to receive clearance from your home state, but you can also check with the FBI. I chose Minnesota as it was the last state I had residence in. Be sure to request that this document is notarized, or it will not be accepted by the TECO office. After you have received this document, you must send it to a TECO office for authentication. This must be done at the TECO office which services the area where the document was issued.

I applied for this clearance from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. The cost is USD 8.00 and may be paid by check or money order. Make payable to BCA. You must also enclose a SASE (Self Addressed Stamped Elephant). Be sure to request that this document is notarized. Mail your request to:

When you receive this, it must be authenticated at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This is also where you will apply for your JFRV once all of your paperwork is in order.

3. Household registry (in Taiwan) with your name and spouse's name. Your spouse can help you with this. The cost is minimal. If you are registering for the first time bring your marriage certificate and passport. You will need 2 original documents.

4. Wedding Certificate, if married outside of Taiwan you will probably need to go through the authentication process . If you were married in Taiwan, your wedding certificate does not need to be authenticated.

5. Documentation that you have registered your marriage in your home country. If your country does not have a central marriage registry you will need a document from your pseudo embassy. Americans will need to waste a few hours of their time and USD 30 (approx. NTD 1000), by going to AIT and receiving a notarized Affidavit of Marriage in Taiwan. You must make an appointment. This can be done online. The document can also be downloaded from their website.

6. Go to MOFA with all of your documents. Fill out the visa application, take a number at the visa counter. In addition to all of the original documents, you should have your passport, your spouse's Taiwan national ID card, and your ARC (if you already have one). You will need at least 2 photos. A photo copier is available, but if you want to be prepared, have copies of all documents and IDs.

7. Return to MOFA at the appointed date to pick up your passport with your new residence visa. This will be 10 days after you applied.

8. Now go to the branch of the National Immigration Agency that services your area of residence. Bring your passport, spouse's Taiwan national ID card, photos, household registry, your existing ARC (if you have one), all of the other documents that MOFA required just in case they ask for them, and finally you may need to have your spouse present. My spouse was not present, but I did have her ID card. The cost was NTD 1000. This is per year of validity. I was only given one year, but I understand that renewal is a simple process of bringing an updated household registry. You will have to wait 2 weeks for your ARC card to be processed. My spouse was able to pick up the card for me, with my receipt and passport.

Taxes

If you've planned ahead then you have spent at least 183 days in Taiwan last year, so you know you will be getting a refund, because those first 6 months you are taxed at 20%. After reaching the the magic number, you qualify for a lower tax rate including a refund on the extra tax you paid in. Where you file your taxes depends on where you live (or where your ARC says you live). Attached is a list of tax offices.

For Taipei City Residents, Taipei's Main Tax office is located within walking distance of the Ximen MRT Station at Zhonghua Rd. Sec. 1, No. 2 / 台北市中華路1段2號 on the corner of Zhongxiao W. Rd. The nearest MRT station is Ximen Station.

Foreigner's service is located on the first floor on the left hand side. Be sure to bring your passport, ARC, tax statements, and bank book for direct deposit or a mailing address for notice by mail that your refund is ready.

For Xindian (Taipei County) Residents the tax office is across the street from Carrefour on Baoqiao Rd. The nearest MRT station is Qizhang Station. Foreigners need to go to the second floor.

Taroko National Park

Taroko National Park / 太魯閣國家公園 / Tàilǔgé gúojiā gōngyuán

Taroko is one of the must see sites in Taiwan. Winding along a mountain pass on one side the cliff goes straight down to the river and on the other side straight up. This is definitely at minimum a weekend trip, but a long weekend would be more realistic. Free camping was available, although this may have changed. In 2005 sites were available with parking, wooden tent platforms, and toilet facilities. The only thing missing was hot water. Also in 2005 the hotsprings were closed indefinitely after falling rocks killed and injured visitors. Taroko is an excellent site to drive if you have a car. If you are more adventurous, you can take the train and then rent a motor scooter. Depending on which shop you go to, you may or may not have a problem renting without a Taiwan driver's license.

The closest larger city is Hualian. This is where many people stay and do day trips into Taroko. They have all of the necessities and luxuries surch Carrefour and Starbucks. Near the train station there are several scooter rental shops, but you may do better if you get off one stop north of Hualian station. At the base of Taroko is a small town, and if you are driving you had better stop and top off the gas tank. Once in Taroko, you will only find small shops selling very basic supplies. There is one hotel in Taroko park.

Dan Ryan’s Grill serves western food. The service and quality is ok, but the food is nothing special and it is more expensive than average. I found Dan Ryan's to be very comfortable but not memorable. The closest MRT Station is Nanjing East Road MRT Station on the Brown-Muzha Line. Go East on Nanjing Road and then turn right (South) on Dunhua Rd. It is about a ten minute walk. It is next door to The Shannon and across the street from Asiaworld Plaza and the Municipal Stadium. They have bar and restaurant seating.

IKEA is located in the Asiaworld Plaza on the north-east corner of Dunhua N. Rd. and Nanjing E. Rd. (敦化北路南京東路口). Delivery is also available through Ikea. In case you have been living in a cave IKEA sells semi-disposable furniture and kitchenware.

There is another IKEA branch in Xinzhuang City, Taipei County. It is on the riverside just across the Dahan Bridge from Banqiao. The cafeteria here is very nice with a view of the river.

Grocery Stores and Supermarkets

All Hypermarkets such as Carrefour and RT Mart have a grocery section. In general these are the best balance between convenience and finding what you want.

Wellcome Supermarkets are found throughout Taipei, and will have certain staples but the selection is not impressive. The exception is the branch at the Miramar in Neihu. This branch has more imports and a better selection in general.

There are some specialty grocery stores. Most well known is Jason's Market with a branch in the basement of the Taipei 101 shopping center. They have another branch in Tianmu in the basement of Dayeh Takashimaya Dept. Store, Zhongcheng Rd., Sec. 2, No. 55 忠誠路二段55號. They have probably the best selection of hard to find western food items. Needless to say, some of their products are expensive. They also have a decent selection of wine and beer.

There is a small specialty grocery store in Zhonghe.

Another specialty grocery store is the City Super located on Dunhua S. Rd. near the Fareastern Plaza Hotel. Details pending.

There are probably places in Taipei City where you can find specialty foods, but if you live in Yonghe or Zhonghe then this will be an option for you. Near the Yongan Market MRT and the Zhonghe park there is a small grocery store selling specialty items including spices, liquors, and Mexican ingredients such as tortillas, sour cream, salsa, and jalapeno peppers. Some items have clearly come from Costco but there are other items you will not find elsewhere.

Grandma Nitti's tastes so shitty. This place is a trap for Shi Da students who don't want to wander to far off the campus. The food was not that good and was expensive by local standards. I would have been better off at one of the local breakfast shops.

The price is average considering the size and the quality. I liked this better than NY Bagels, and certainly better than Grandma Nitti's.

There are a handful of Mexican Restaurants in Taipei, but I would kill for a Chipotle burrito. The only one I've been to is Tequila Sunrise and all I can say is don't do it. The food was bland and overpriced. There was really nothing to make it stand out. The decor was ok, but that only gets you so far. They did do a decent margarita, but that only stimulated my appetite and made me more disappointed with my meal.

Mobile Phones and Chinese SMS text messages

If you want to use Chinese characters in text messages you may become frustrated by the limits imposed by your phone. All of the phones have had some features I liked and some I did not. For inputting Chinese characters, the best phone I've found is Motorola. Here is a run down of the brands I've owned (in chronological order).

1. Motorola
pros: able to enter Chinese characters using Pinyin simply by selecting the input method. The operating system can remain in English and changing the input method is done using the # key..
cons: none

2. BenQ
pros: able to enter Chinese using Pinyin
cons: The operating system must be switched to Chinese in order to input Chinese characters.

3. Nokia
pros: able to enter Chinese using Pinyin
cons: The operating system must be switched to Chinese in order to input Chinese characters.

4. Sony Ericsson
pros: The operating system can remain in English.
cons: Pinyin is not supported. Input must be done using Zhuyin (Bopomofo) or stroke sequence. Changing the input method takes several steps.

General Pros & Cons
1. Motorola V150 (I think)
I bought a low end Motorola flip phone and I got what I paid for. The volume was generally insufficient both for listening to the other party and for hearing the ring tone. When a call was missed or text message left unread, the phone would continue to emit reminder beeps indefinitely and I was unable to deactivate this feature. I also had some problems with the phone powering off by itself. I did like the interface which was generally user friendly, but overall the phone was crap. What good is the interface when the actual features are not satisfactory.
2. BenQ S670C
I bought a mid-range BenQ flip phone with camera. This was to replace my Motorola which was driving me mad. While it had some nice features, it was generally not user friendly. For text messages, the iTap feature was terrible. The vocabulary was extremely limited. New words could not be added to the dictionary, and you could not select words which were not on its list without changing the input method. Sometimes it would not recognize a common word, but give nonsense combinations as options. One example of this is that it could not spell "Taiwan". This had to be input as "Tai" and "Wan" which individually have no meaning but did appear in the iTap selection. The camera and some of the buttons began to fail, but fortunately this was while it was still under warranty, but it took 2 trips to the service center to get the issues resolved. Overall I beleive the Q stands for questionable.
3. Nokia 2600
I bought a low end Nokia candybar style phone to use while my BenQ was in the shop. I must say that while it lacked any special features, the phone itself worked beautifully and the interface was very simple.
4. Sony Ericsson K750i
This phone was a gift and I am still getting to know it. So far I'm very pleased. It is feature rich yet relatively easy to use.

Bitan & Xindian River

From Xindian MRT Station it is a short walk to the riverside which is lined with shops, games, and restaurants. There is a pedestrian bridge across the river to Bitan. On either side of the river you can rent paddle boats for approx. $200 for an hour. This is a scenic area on the edge of the city and can make for a relaxing day in good weather.

Rosemary's Kitchen
When crossing from Xindian to Bitan on the pedestrian bridge, Rosemary's Kitchen is on the right hand side, next to the bridge. It has a nice view of the river, decent coffee, and good service.

Rendezvous Stone Oven Pizza & Bar - no longer exists after Bitan was remodeled.

Camping in Pinglin 坪林

Pinglin is on Highway 9. From Xindian 新店 it is 26 km to Pinglin 坪林 and 47 km to Yilan 宜蘭. Allow about 1 hour from Xindian if traveling by scooter. From Taipei go South on Roosevelt Road (羅斯福路 Luósīfú Lù). When you cross the river into Xindian, the name will change to Bei Shin Road but the road remains the same. Where you would turn right to go to Wulai, you will continue straight and the road will become Hwy. 9. Once you are out of Xindian you will start to climb the mountain hills. Roads can have dangerously sharp curves but traffic is not bad as many cars will use the freeway.

To get to the campsites in Pinglin take Highway 9 from Xindian towards Pinglin. If you reach the town of Pinglin you have gone a few km too far. Near the 35.5 km road marker there will be a road turning to the right and going downhill. There will be some signs in Chinese only pointing to various attractions. Following the road you will round a bend and cross a bridge with a Chinese arch over it. You will travel for a few minutes and eventually cross a small bridge. On the other side is a T-intersection where you will turn left. There is a paved walking/biking trail on the left, which follows the river. Go for a few more minutes. You will come to a guard station and another T-intersection. If you go to the driveway straight ahead you have reached the first campsite.

This site accommodates drive-in camping. Shaded campsites are available with cement bases and fire rings. Bathrooms are relatively clean and have hot water showers. Campsite is on the river. Cost was TWD 330 for 2 people. The campsite had a small store selling Taiwan Beer in a can, Coke, and other essentials.

Another option is to turn right at the intersection. You will continue for a few minutes and there will be a driveway on the left hand side which goes downhill. This site is also on the river.

There are more campsites on the other side of the Pinglin. If arriving in Pinglin on Highway 9 from Xindian. On the far side of town is highway 北42 (bei3/north 42). The road continues all the way to Taipei entering Muzha, but this is very much a secondary highway. The road is narrow, barely wide enough for two cars to pass and no center line or shoulders. Many of the sharp switchback turns have wide angle mirrors but many do not. It would be a nice country drive if you didn't have to worry about a car around every blind corner.

There are several campsites available near the 4, 13, and 15 km markers of 北42. At the 4 km marker there are two campsites. At the 13 km marker there is one campsite and the road to 黑龍潭 hēi lóng tán. At the 15 km marker there is one site.

Of the two sites at the 4 km marker, the first has nicer bathroom facilities. The second has nicer riverside campsites, but the toilet and bathing facilites are more rugged. The bathrooms do have hot water showers, but they were a bit dark and dirty. They also have a teahouse with KTV so you may not get to enjoy the peace and quiet of nature in the countryside.

At the 13 km marker, there is a small riverside site. There is a lack of shade here but the sites are directly on the riverside. I did not stay here, so don't know about toilet facilities but it looks like they could be questionable.

At the 15 km marker campsite the toilet facilities consist of two toilets and one shower for the whole campsite which is fine if it is not crowded. A shower is an additional $30.

FYI:
Pinglin is famous for Tea which I didn’t bother to try. The actual town of Pinglin serves only as a pit stop where you can refuel your car or scooter, stop at 7-11, and use the ATM. Between Xindian and Pinglin you won’t find any of these three. There are also a handful of restaurants and of course plenty of tea shops. All of the campsites have a small shop selling basic supplies such as charcoal, grills, bottled water, and Taiwan Beer. If you need any specialty items be sure to stock up in town.

This is a formal western style steak restaurant that does an excellent steak with a baked potato on the side. The only thing they are lacking is an English menu and signboard in front.

Fogo Churrascaria Brazilian BBQ

The barbequed meat which comes out fresh from the kitchen on metal skewers is delicious. They had beef, lamb, pork, chicken, shrimp and more. Unfortunately there were two things that make me unable to recommend this restaurant. First, besides the BBQ there is not much else to eat. There is a very small soup and salad bar. Second, when busy the service suffers greatly. The waiters bring the BBQ out of the kitchen and are supposed to distribute it amongst the tables. What ends up happening is they always begin at the tables nearest the kitchen, and the food is gone by the time they reach the back of restaurant. I had to complain a couple of times before food started to find its way to my table.

This is one of my favorite buffet restaurants. The price depends on the time you eat. As with all buffets that include alcohol, I stick to the beer. The wine is Carlo Rossi which in the US can be bought by the gallon.

The food, on the other hand is delicious. From roast beef to sushi, the selection is incredible, and the quality is quite good too.

Driving south on Roosevelt Rd. cross the bridge to Xindian and immediately turn right. By MRT you can walk from the Dapinglin Station. Come out of Exit 1 (or 3 or 4) and cross the street and walk about one block.

EDIT 7/2008: I continue to eat here on occassion. The quality of the food remains consistent and this remains my favorite buffet restaurant. On my last visit I see they have changed from Tiger Beer and now serve Hsing Dao Beer. The beer tap seemed to pour a bit easier than the old Tiger tap. I also noticed that the cheap whiskey has disappeared.

This is very good and reasonably priced Thai Food. The decor is simple but tasteful, with Thai designs and colored backlighting. I especially enjoy their green curry chicken and the shrimp cakes, but all the food is good. They have some special dishes for $100 but most dishes are in the $150 range. A typical meal may cost about $300 per person. They have Singha Beer to give you an authentic taste of Thailand. They are located on Nanjing East Road, Sec. 5 on the Northeast corner of the Guangfu North Road intersection.

Yangming Shan & Xin Beitou Driving Directions

Traveling by scooter or car, cross the river from Central Taipei going towards Beitou and Yangmingshan, going north on Chengde Rd.(承德路 Chéngdé Lù) Staying on the main road, there will be brown street signs directing you to Xin Beitou and Yangmingshan. From Xin Beitou there is access to Yangmingshan. Basically stay on the main road unless directed by the signs. When you reach Xin Beitou, the MRT station will be on the right hand side and you will be on Daye Rd (大業路 Dàyè Lù) which connects with several roads.

To continue to Yangmingshan take Quanyuan Rd. (泉源路 Quányuán Lù) which is ahead and to the left. Continue on and you are in Yangmingshan. Follow the signs for additional options. If you follow Zhongshan Rd. (中山路 Zhōngshān Lù) the park will be on the right hand side which has an adjoining museum and public hotspring. There is no shortage of private spas to choose from if you want something nicer. The public hotspring is built on a hill with several pools. The hottest pools are on top and then flow into the lower pools at the bottom. There is also a cold water pool. These are co-ed pools so swimming suits are required.

Another option to reach Yangmingshan by car or scooter is to go north on Chengde Rd. (承德路 Chéngdé Lù) or by car only go North on Zhongshan N. Rd. (中山北路 Zhōngshān Běi Lù). From either road turn right (east) onto Zhongzheng Rd. (中正路 Zhōngzhèng Lù). This will merge with Fulin Rd and at the base of Yangmingshan will become Yangde Blvd. (仰德大道 Yǎngdé Dàdào). This is the main road to Yangmingshan. You can expect heavier traffic, especially during weekends and rush hour. This road may be closed to non-residents during the weekend, so you are advised to follow the route through Xin Beitou especially if you are travelling by car.

Aunt Su's Pizza

They feature deep dish pizza but it is a mediocre pizza. The fried chicken is also decidedly average. Their commitment to being good enough can be seen by spelling their name wrong on the front door. It reads "Aunt's Su" instead of "Aunt Su's". Monday through Friday they have lunch and dinner buffets. It is located opposite of Sun Yet Sen Memorial (國父紀念館 guó fù jì niàn guǎn) on Guang Fu South Rd. between Zhongxiao East Rd. and Renai Rd.

Yakiniku House is a Japanese barbeque. It is very good as long as you don't mind cooking for yourself on the charcoal grill that is brought to your table. There is a ventilation fan over each table so it is not smokey. You can get assorted thin sliced meats or seafood. The seating is split between ordinary tables and sections where you remove your shoes and sit on the floor, but there is a sunken area to put your feet if you don't like sitting cross legged. The salmon rice soup is very good. Service is good too. Located on the 11th floor of the living mall.

Dr. Sun Yat Sen’s House

Dr. Sun Yat Sen’s House is a very small walled in park near Taipei Main Station. If you are near Taipei Main Station (MRT & Train Station), this is a nice escape from the city around you. There are fishponds and you can walk through Dr. Sun’s house. From Taipei Main Station (train station) go out the East exit, cross one street and you will hit a white wall. Follow the sidewalk around to the opposite side and there will be an entrance on Zhongshan North Road. There is not much inside the house; it’s the courtyard that makes it worth visiting. All of the signs are in Chinese but be aware that no photography is allowed inside the house, but don't worry you won't be missing out.

Sun Yet Sen Memorial / 國父紀念館 / Guó Fù Jìniàn Guǎn

There is a nice courtyard and park, which are the best features. Inside you will find an art exhibit and a big statue of Dr. Sun. Located near the Sun Yet Sen. MRT Station on the Blue Line. The memorial itself is not such an overwhelming attraction, but it is the center of a very nice park which offers an excellent view of Taipei 101.

Ximen Night Market and Red House Theater

This is more of a large pedestrian thoroughfare lined with shops than a traditional night market, but of course there are some street stalls as well. The Red House Theater is a dinner theater across the street. The building is backlit in red so it really stands out at night. They have a good gift shop if you are trying to find souvenirs to take home.

Go to the Ximen MRT Station, which is one stop west of Taipei Main Station. If you are on the Red Line, you can bypass the chaos of the main station by transferring at CKS Memorial Hall to the Pea Green-Ximen Line.

The Grand Hotel / 圓山大飯店 / Yuán Shān Dà Fàn Diàn

This lives up to its name; it is a towering pagoda style structure with a view of the city. It is starting to show signs of age, but is still very impressive. There are no doubt more luxurious hotels, but none with as much character. Take the MRT to Yuanshan. From there you can take a taxi for $70.

CKS (Chiang Kaishek) Memorial Hall and National Concert Hall
中正紀念堂 Zhōngzhèng jìniàn táng

This is a great example of Chinese architecture in the center of the city. It is easy to get to and can be seen quite quickly. Although it is very impressive and should be on your list, there’s really not that much to see beyond the exterior. Inside you will find a statue of Chiang Kaishek and some honor guards. This is also a gathering place for public events such as New Year’s celebrations and political rallies. On Either side of the courtyard are two towering red pagoda style buildings. One is the National Theatre Hall and the other is the National Concert Hall.

By MRT it is located on the Red-Danshui Line 2 stops south of Main Station. Get off at CKS Memorial Hall Station, exit and you will be right there.

A few blocks South of Taipei Main Station and next to NTU Hospital MRT Station is one of Taipei’s bigger parks (2nd after Daan). It has walking paths, fishponds, shaded pagodas, and an outdoor stage.

I got a pair of custom orthopedic insoles from Dr. Mark. He takes a mold of your feet and they are ready in a couple of weeks. Getting the mold is maybe a 30 minute process. Cost is around NTD 10,000. These are the sports shoe insole.There is a dress shoe insole which I beleive uses leather instead of foam.

The white is a dense foam, the gray is a plastic, and the blue is a standard foam you would find in a shoe insole. These are supposed to last for several years, but I don't think that counts the blue foam which must be able to be replaced.

For a bit of luxury the basement of the Westin Taipei Hotel has a theater in the basement level which has sofas with footrests. Tickets are NTD 350 and reservations are advised however if you show up and no tickets are available, you may wait to see if there is a no show and can get seated just before show time.

Parco makes an excellent personal size thin crust pizza. They also as the name would imply serve pasta. Bottled beer is available. Service is good, and they make sure there is always a carafe of water on the table.

American Citizen Services at AIT

AIT is located on Xinyi Rd., Sec. 3, No. 134. It is just east of Jianguo Rd. Most services will require that you make an appointment online.

If you are American you won't need to wait in the oppressive line being formed out front, just join the line to go through security. You will have to turn off and check in your mobile phone, and any other electronic devices such as a notebook computer or mp3 player. You will need an ID other than your passport to leave with your checked items. You will need your passport to take care of your business. Proceed to the back of the building and up to the 2nd floor. At the time of your appointment, they will announce that everyone with an appointment at that time should come to the window to check in. They will take your passport and documents and then send you to the cashiers window to pay any fees. Then you will wait for your name to be called.

If you need a document notarized make an appointment online, it will cost approx. NTD 1000 (USD 30.00). You will receive a discount if you have a second document notarized at the same time.

Getting something done at AIT can be a long painful process. It took me about 2 hours to get a document notarized, the actual notary process taking about 2 minutes, and the rest of the time waiting. But it didn't seem so bad when I came out and saw what the Taiwanese had to go through on the first floor. It is also a bit odd to have someone talk at you with a microphone through a window with a slot just large enough to pass documents. Since they are using a microphone, you will be treated to a recap of everyone else's private business while you wait your turn.

The MRT underground & elevated train network

MRT=Metro Rapid Transit. Chinese: 捷運 jié yùn

While you are here you may want to make use of Taipei’s public transit system. The subway known as the MRT is very efficient and easy to use. All stops are labeled and announced in English. If you use the MRT on a regular basis you will want to buy an Easy Card. This is a prepaid debit card. You simply touch it to the sensor on the turnstile as you enter and leave the MRT station. You will hear a high-pitched beep and the turnstile will unlock. If you are using a one-time use ticket, feed the ticket into the slot and it will come out on top. Take the ticket, as you will need it to exit. One-time use tickets may be purchased from vending machines located in each station. Check the map on the vending machine to determine the proper fare for your destination.

Easy Cards can be purchased at any MRT station ticket window and some automated vending machines in the stations. If the attendant does not understand, ask for a Yoyo card, its Chinese name. Easy Cards can also be used for public buses and some car parks. You can recharge them at vending machines located at each MRT station using either an ATM card or cash.

The MRT is also an excellent resource for maps. They have a free English language map of Taipei and detailed maps of the area surrounding each station. These maps are also available online.

Public Buses

Public buses can take you everywhere the MRT cannot. The signs at bus stops will be in Chinese only. Some public buses are labeled in English, but not all. This is continually improving but progress can be slow.

When you use your Easy Card on a bus you touch the sensor only once, but whether to do so at the beginning or the end will depend on the bus. Near the driver, every bus will have a backlit red sign in Chinese only. The first character will be either 上 or下.

上 means you should pay as you enter.

下 means you should pay as you exit.

To remember I imagine the characters are stick men. 上 is holding his arm out blocking your way until you pay. 下 is pointing down the stairs, telling you to pay as you go down.

TAXIS

Taxis are usually easy to flag down, are affordable, and the drivers are generally reasonably honest. The catch is that you must be prepared for the fact that most drivers CANNOT speak or read English. This can cause frustration if you cannot say your destination in Chinese. Even if you can say your address there may by misunderstandings because of your accent, and one tone or syllable can change the destination. If you have your destination written down in Chinese, or if you have a Chinese friend who can give directions to the driver using your mobile phone, then you should have no problem. Taipei City taxis start the meter at $70 and charge for time and distance with a higher rate charged between 11:00 pm and 6:00 am. Additional charges for baggage handling and other services may apply.

TRASH & RECYCLING IN TAIPEI CITY

If you live in an apartment, then you may have trash removal as part of your maintenance fee. Even so, to stay on good terms with your building staff, you should realize that some garbage must be separated and recycling has been mandated by the city. Follow the link for trash and recycling schedules in Taipei City. If you have to take out your own trash, there are typically two pick-up times per day, which will vary depending on your location, except for Wednesday and Sunday when there is no pick up. Listen for the musical garbage truck, it should come at the same times every day. You will also need special tax stamped bags in Taipei City, which are sold at most supermarkets and convenience stores. Recycling does not need to be in the tax stamped bag, any bag will do. Miramar Shopping Center, Neihu District, Taipei 美麗華

The Miramar (美麗華 Měi Lì Huā) is most notable for it's Ferris Wheel. Besides all of the shopping attractions the Miramar has regular movies, Imax, and Imax 3D movies. Movie and Ferris Wheel combos are available. There is a Wellcome Supermarket in the basement which has a better selection than most, it has offerings similar to what can be found in Wellcome's premium supermarket chain, Jason's. The food court has many different options. For casual western dining there is a Le blé d'or Brewery Restaurant and a TGIFriday's.

Luxy is a nightclub with a posh interior, two different music rooms, and plenty of attractive young people dressed to be noticed. While casual attire is tolerated, they draw the line at sandals and you may be turned away if you’re shoes are judged to be inappropriate. The cover charge is $400 if you arrive before 10pm. After that the cover charge is $700. This is one of the few places in Taipei that actually asked for my ID, so be prepared.

Getting to Luxy: Luxy is located about 20 meters from Zhongxiao Dunhua MRT Station Exit 2 on Zhongxiao Rd.

Of all of the pubs at www.taipeipubs.com this is the worst. While it is not bad, the atmosphere is a bit sterile. There is little to make this pub stand out from any other. Another complaint is that even if you are ordering alcoholic drinks, they will not give you water.

Hooters is a fun diversion for some comfort food and girl watching. They are true to the theme of their franchise, including the decor, table settings, and especially the waitresses in tight t-shirts and short orange shorts. Service was good even on a busy Saturday night. They also put on a hula-hoop and limbo performance. Their website is only in Chinese, but you can preview the waitresses at http://www.hooters.com.tw/

Getting to Hooters: Located on Qingcheng St. a short distance from the Nanjing East MRT Station on the Brown-Muzha Line, walk straight out of the exit and it will be on your right.

The Shannon bill themselves as an Irish pub; this is a nice pub with good ambiance and drinks. They have a back room that is separated by a curtain which is supposed to be smoke free. It is next to Dan Ryan’s Restaurant. It is across the street from Asiaworld Plaza and the Municipal Stadium. The closest MRT Station is Nanjing East Road MRT Station on the Brown-Muzha Line. Go East on Nanjing Road and then turn right (South) on Dunhua Rd. It is about a ten minute walk.
